| Hello everyone... this is a fun part of the site. It is filled with my
opinions about this life we're all in; my critical evaluations of events
and works of art... also a list of sites you should visit and people
you should check out, some of which are also featured on the
(link to discography page) discography page. Soon there will be an archive of some of
the funny gig emailings I've sent out over the years, so you can be
part of the club, too... Review of Press Room, July 2003 (Jim Pisano/Mark Shilansky/Les Harris, Jr/Jim Howe), by Alan Chase Links: www.taylorhaskins.com www.lucianasouza.com www.andrewrathbun.com Messages from Mark: This is Now Tour, end of year rant (12/14/04) Dec 4 & 5: Shilansquanza (12/1/04) Late Summer Shilansky (8/18/04) What's Up with Shilansky (10/29/04) Gig Reminder: Syncopation and Shilansky (11/18/04) Here are my favorite CDs for 2004 (no particular order). Some weren't actually RELEASED in 2004, but I listened to them nonstop in that year. Followed by this is a growing list of my top CDs of all time which influenced who I am as a person and artist today (notice the relative dearth of pianists... hmm... These are also in no particular order, which is why STYX [an obvious choice for #1] comes so far after Wayne [an obvious guilty pleasure]. I must confess a certain nepotism in including the Lauren Wool CD, as I was obviously involved in that, but it's THAT good, I promise; truth be told, the music I spend the most time listening to is stuff I'm working on at the time, with whichever artist that may be, so you'll most often find in my Car CD player (the only place I have time to really listen...) rough mixes of Christina Watson or Syncopation or the 18 takes of my piano solo that I'm in the process of editing... 1) Mutual admiration society CD (Nickel Creek with Glen Phillips) and live show (featuring John Paul Jones and Pete Thomas) 2) Michael Brecker Quindektett - Wide Angles 3) Brad Mehldau - anything goes 4) Ron Sexsmith - retriever 5) tom waits - real gone 6) elvis costello - the delivery man 7) joni mitchell - travelogue 8) New York Voices and Paquito D'Rivera - Brazilian Dreams 9) kd lang - hymns to the 47th parallel 10) Alison Krauss - Lonely Runs Both Ways 11) Norah Jones - Feels like home 12) James Taylor - October Road 13) Prince - Musicology 14) William Shatner - Has Been 15) Lovano/Liebman/Brecker - Gathering of Spirits 16) Luciana Souza - Neruda 17) Lauren Wool - Here with Me favorite records of all time! 1) Anything by Miles Davis 2) Radiohead - OK computer 3) joni mitchell - anything but mainly blue, shadows and light, turbulent indigo 4) prince sign o' the times, emancipation, rave unto the joy, first symbol record, 1999, lovesexy 5) Wayne Shorter - "speak no evil" 6) Michael Franks - "abandoned garden" 7) Anything by sting or the police 8) Anything by Elvis Costello, but especially "juliet letters," "imperia bedroom" "king of america" "painted from memory" 9) Bee Gees "spirits having flown," "still waters" "main course" 10) Joe Lovano - Universal Language 11) Kenny Werner - Guru 12) stan getz - serenity 13) herbie hancock - empyrean isles 14) mike stern - upside downside 15) mike brecker 1st 2 solo records 16) bill evans portrait in jazz, we will meet again 17) Tony Bennett - bill evans and tony bennett, the movie song album 18) Don Fagen - the nightfly, ANY STEELY DAN, but especially aja, gaucho, 2 against nature 19) Stephen Sondheim - sunday in the park w/ george, into the woods, merrily we roll along 20) Bill frisell "have a little faith","gone just like a train" "lookout for hope" 21) John scofield "blue matter," "what we do," "keep me in mind" 22) Steps Ahead - "steps ahead" 23) Anything by Ron Sexsmith 24) Anything by Shawn Colvin 25) Billy Joel - "52nd st," "nylon curtain," "the bridge", anything 26) Peter Gabriel - "so" 27) James Taylor - "never die young," "greatest hits," "hourglass" 28) Squeeze - "argybargy," "east side story," "picadillly collection,""play" 29) Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra - "soft lights and sweet music" 30) Mel Lewis and friends, w/Brecker, Freddie, Ron, Hank Jones 31) Count Basie - Atomic Basie 32) Rufus Wainwright - Poses 33) The Story - Angel in the house, Grace In Gravity 34) Jonatha Brooke - 10 cent wings, Plumb 35) new york voices - hearts of fire 36) Aaron Copland - Quiet City 37) Paul Simon - Rhythm of the Saints, Hearts and Bones, and of course Graceland 38) Michael McDonald - the tunes "minute by minute," "what a fool believes," "I keep forgettin" and "I can let go now" 39) Alison Krauss - "forget about it" 40) Once Blue - "Once Blue," Rebecca Martin - "thoroughfare" 41) hall and oates - "voices" 42) tom waits - rain dogs 43) styx - "equinox," "cornerstone," "crystal ball,""pieces of eight," "haven't we been here before" from mr. roboto 44) Pat Metheny - First Circle, Still Life (talking), Letter from Home 45) John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman 46) anything by Luciana Souza 47) Kenny Wheeler - Double, Double You, Music for Large and Small Ensembles 48) Taylor Haskins - Wake Up Call 49) Andrew Rathbun - Structures |
